BRAZIL WEEKLY’S BRAZIL’S NEXT 10 HOTTEST BUSINESS CITIES
No doubt the biggest and most important business centres of Brazil are the megacities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and do not forget most other state capitals like Belo Horizonte, Salvador da Bahia, Recife, Fortaleza, Curitiba and Porto Alegre. But Brazil is big and there are plenty of other fast developing cities, not being state capitals. So for a minute forget Sao Paulo, Rio and those other 2014 World Cup host cities and check out Brazil Weekly’s Brazil’s Next 10 Hottest Business Cities.
Deep in the Amazon forest in Brazil’s Northern State of Acre, a public initiative that combines the highest technological investments with an eye on a sustainable future has created Natex, the only company in the world that produces eco-condoms entirely with native latex extracted from seringueiras (rubber trees) (The Rio Times).
Police in Brazil are sending reinforcements to a remote town in the Amazon jungle after members of an indigenous group burned down a police station. An officer was hit in the arm by an arrow during the attack. Officials said about 60 Munduruku indigenous people attacked the station after a judge released two suspects in the murder of a tribesman (BBC).
Belo Horizonte is known nationally as a strategic leader in Brazil’s economy and a major regional centre of commerce, with a developed industrial sector. It is one of 12 cities chosen for the tournament, but is also one of six host cities for the Confederations Cup preparation event next year (BBC).
The Cidade Maravilhosa has become even more marvelous in the eyes of the world. In the first decision of its kind, Rio de Janeiro’s breathtaking natural landscapes were awarded the UNESCO World Heritage title during UNESCO’s 36th World Heritage Committee Session held in Saint Petersburg, Russia (The Rio Times).
SPLIT SECOND POLLS
New housing starts in the city of Sào Paulo, Brazil’s biggest real estate market, are expected to fall 21 percent this year from last year, industry group Secovi-SP said, down from a prior outlook for a 5 percent decline (Reuters).
Inflation in Sao Paulo slowed down in June as a decline in transportation costs helped offset a jump in food prices, an economic research institute said. The IPC-FIPE index rose 0.23 percent last month, compared with a gain of 0.35 percent in May, according to the University of São Paulo’s FIPE research institute (Reuters).
